Page Speed Matters

page speed Is a ranking factor

Google uses page speed as a ranking factor for both desktop and mobile searches.  That means faster websites rank better than slower ones.  This is because a faster website provides a better user experience, and google wants to recommend websites with a good user experience.

Official Google Statements

  • The Desktop Ranking Signal (2010): Google first announced site speed as a ranking factor for desktop searches in April 2010. They stated that “like us, our users place a lot of value in speed — that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings”.
  • The Mobile “Speed Update” (2018): In July 2018, Google expanded this factor to mobile searches, noting that “page speed will be a ranking factor for mobile searches” to help people find answers as fast as possible.
  • Core Web Vitals & Page Experience (2020/2021): Google formalized speed metrics into the Page Experience signal, which includes Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, and INP). These became direct ranking signals starting in 2021.
